Koi / Carp
Cyprinus rubrofuscus
Here is a glimpse of my Koi pond I designed at our home’s main entrance that is home to some two dozen ornamental Koi, many of which are Prize winning specimen.
There are many varieties of ornamental Koi, originating from breeding that began in Niigata, Japan, in the early 19th century. Several varieties are recognised by the Japanese, distinguished by colouration, patterning, and scalation. Amount the most prolific colourations ~ besides the metallic shades such as gold and silver-white ‘platinum’ scales ~ are red, orange, yellow, blue, white, black, cream and brown. The most popular category of Koi is the Gosanke, comprising the Kohaku, Taisho Sanshoku and Showa varieties.
Flanked on three sides by our 3 reception rooms all open out to overlook the pond
